7 Wonders
Antipater of Sidon listed 7 wonders of the ancient world for people to go and see. The name of this list is more descriptive than the ancient's name of the list which was 'θεάματα' which means 'must sees'. To begin with, the modern list name tells us where all the sights were as the ancient's world consisted of only the land around the Mediterranean. It also tells us that there were 7 of them. 7 was considered to be a sacred number and a civil number as it was the number of Apollo and also the number of planets and moons etc. that the ancients knew about.
Of the seven wonders, only the Great Pyramid of Giza remains. The others (the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria) have all been destroyed by nature or man but in their day they looked over the ancient world and commanded the worship of all that heard of them. Like the true Gods of truly incredible age.
