The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a pivotal moment in the Cold War where a Third World War almost came about. However in this war would have been unlike any-other because this war would be fought with missiles instead of people and guns. These missile were not ordinary ordinance these missiles were nuclear armed.
The Cuban Missile Crisis, also known as the October Crisis happened during October 14, 1962 - October 28, 1962 and it took place when a American aircraft spotted missile silos on Cuba. These missiles were placed there by the USSR after request from Cuba to deter the USA from invading Cuba and a deal was struck between Nikita Khrushchev (The USSR leader of the time) and Fidel Castro (The Cuban leader) which allowed the building of missile launch facilities. However these missiles were in potentially in range of Florid and Kennedy was called out as ignoring the Russian threat in Cuba and potentially risking the lives of thousands of American citizens, if not more.
Then an American U-2 Spy-plane confirmed with clear photographic evidence that there were medium range and Intermediate range ballistic and potentially nuclear missile facilities in Cuba.

After receiving conformation about this President Kennedy decided that this could not be allowed and so Kennedy created a Naval block to all military ships too and from Cuba to prevent the U.S.S.R sending more missiles to Cuba, however this understandably angered the U.S.S.R as they were being blocked off from a ally where they have considerable might. In order to solve this conflict Kennedy called his chosen advisers (known as ExComm) and over 13 intense days Kennedy and Khrushchev tried to forge a deal to prevent a nuclear war and the deaths of 100 million Americans and over 100 million Russians.
Kennedy was presented with two solutions to the crisis, either accepting the Soviets missiles in Cuba or attacking and destroying them however Kennedy could see that doing either would lead to huge problems so he forged a third option. The third option was a deal where the United States of America publicly promised not to invade Cuba and a ultimatum which stated that the U.S.A would attack Cuba if the offer was not accepted in 24 hours and a private sweetener that stated that the U.S.A would remove U.S missiles from Turkey within six months time.
Then there was a anxious wait, a wait for a world changing answer, yes or no to the deal. In the 24th hour in the last few minutes left the U.S.S.R decided to accept the terms of the deal and a potential World War 3 was prevented and on the 20th of November 1962 the military blockade was ended after all the Soviet missiles had been removed and because of the deal the Moscow-Washington hotline was set up which saved the world from annother crisis as a U.S spy plane had gotten lost in a storm and had found itself above Russian soil however the hotline allowed quick communication between the two and annother crisis was averted. Afterwards, over the course of the next few years a series of contracts greatly reduced tentions between the U.S.A ans the U.S.S.R.
